14th Asiatic Lion Census in Gir Lion Conservation Landscape
Asiatic lion counting has been done at interval of every five years. The fourteenth Asiatic lion counting was conducted during 2nd May to 5th May 2015 in entire lion distribution range in four districts and also in the neighbouring areas where the animals occasionally visit. As per the cattle kill data and other official records, lions move in 1,475 villages out of total 2,382 villages in the four districts. The distribution range may be estimated about 16,900 sq. km. which includes areas of four sanctuaries (Gir, Girnar, Pania and Mitiyala) and national parks

Lion distribution range expanded in the four districts-Junagadh, Gir Somnath, Amreli and Bhavnagar. At present, Junagadh and Amreli districts have been reconstituted in the three districts- Junagadh, Gir Somnath, Amreli. District-wise distribution of lion populations is as under.
